Construction of the Body Cooling Unit

The B.C.U. consists of two main components - the Cooling Bed and the Service Cabinet.
The Cooling Bed
  • The Cooling Bed

The patient is placed on a stretched net which slides on to the rim of the bed which is made of moulded fibre-glass on bracketed wheels. For the cooling of the patient the bed is provided with two sets of ducts, one near the base of the bed below the patient and the other above the patient. Heated air (from the Service Cabinet) is blown through the perforations in the ducting while water spray is ejected under pressure, controlled from the service cabinet and sprayed from above and below from nozzles carried by the ducting. A tank for the water supply is incorporated in the compressed air line.

The bed has a drainage outlet at the foot end for sluicing as required. Straps are available for securing the patient if he is restless. The bed also gives clear access for examining the patient and administering ancillary treatment during cooling. The Control/Service Console
  • Control/Service Console

The Control/Service Console houses the heaters and fans for the warmed air supply, and the fittings and gauges for controlling a supply of compressed air, used for the atomising of the water vapour.

The control panel is equipped with mains electrical isolation switch-gear. Power and warning lights. An adjustable warm supply temperature thermostat needle gauges and a lockable controller for the either timed or manually operated water vapour spray system.
